Most kids juggle multiple sports through their teenage years before eventually making a choice — this or that. The same was true for one of the biggest names in football today: Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes. He played both baseball and football until it was time to commit to Texas Tech University. Then came the 2017 NFL Draft, where the Chiefs scooped him up with the 10th overall pick. The rest? Pure history. Three Super Bowl titles in just eight seasons.
Now, another name is starting to echo a similar story in this year’s draft — Miami’s rising star and quarterback sensation, Cam Ward.
Ward played baseball before turning to football. Not just that. Other factors have often led people to draw comparisons between him and the Grim Reaper. His coach, Darrell Colbert Jr, talked about his abilities on the April 10 episode of The Rich Eisen Show. He cited the college staff while trying to show Ward’s talent.
The coach said, “I’m not saying that this kid is Patrick Mahomes but the play style is Patrick Mahomes — how they like you said, how they look, the build, but just all the different arm angles, all the off-platform stuff that they that Pat does, Cam does — you know, the baseball background that Cam has, Patrick Mahomes has, you know, so all the different things.” That’s an interesting comparison.
In his single season for Miami in 2024, Cam Ward played 13 games (all starters) and came out on top with a 10-3 win-loss record. He completed 305 of 454 passes (67.2% completion rate) in 4,313 passing yards, 39 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. His rushing game was also on point as he had 60 rushes for 204 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns.
Physically, there are striking similarities between Patrick Mahomes and Cam Ward. While the Chiefs’ QB is 6-foot-2 and 225 lbs, Cam Ward is also 6-foot-2, 219 lbs. The story comes full circle as the veteran player ends up inspiring the young boy to chase his dreams.
Colbert also described the influence on the college player and added, “He (Ward) watches Patrick Mahomes, you know, so he sees that, okay? He’s like, “Okay, shoot, I do the same stuff, you know.” So that’s my comparison. Of course, you know, Keller Williams does a lot of that stuff as well, but my comparison would be Patrick Mahomes. I’m not saying he’s Patrick Mahomes, but his play style is very close.” The NFL teams are excited about the quarterback.
Ward is expected to be the first overall pick of the coming draft. The Titans choose first. Will they draft him? The question is still looming.
From college star to NFL powerhouse: Cam Ward’s next chapter
Ex-NFLer Louis Riddick has seen various drafts throughout his life. He has analyzed it from a player’s and a commentator’s lens. But this year, he is also excited about the draft. With talent that comes very close to Patrick Mahomes, the former Browns safety said, “Look, I said my comp for Cam Ward because of the way he plays, he reminds me of Patrick (Mahomes) with how he can be unconventional, throw the football from all kinds of weird angles. Then just put a bunch of horsepower on it when he needs to,” after comparing them both.
If that happens, then Cam Ward’s stock will increase sharply. Nobody might not be able to stop him. He also shared his excitement over the draft and added, “If someone was telling me that’s maybe what you’re getting… I’d be pretty damn excited. Now, I’m not saying I’m exactly right. But that’s my bet—that Cam Ward will have that kind of impact and play that kind of style of football in Tennessee if they select him at No. 1.” The big question looming? Which team will draft him?
The Titans, Browns (2nd), and the Giants (3rd) are among the favorites. More than 100 scouts across the NFL attended his Pro Day. He threw the ball and made sure that he gained the respect of the NFL franchises before the process began in Green Bay in Wisconsin. Sit tight! The rumors will only get wilder, and the talks will only get crazier.
