Leona Maguire WITB September 2024: Irish Pro’s Golfing Essentials Revealed

Leona Maguire may have caught the spotlight in last week’s Solheim Cup for her questioning of captain Suzann Pettersen’s selections, but the Irish LPGA pro has good reason to back herself on the course. In June 2022, at the Amundi Evian Championship, she became the youngest player in golf to score the lowest score in any major with a 61 scorecard. She then got into the Solheim Cup team and scored the highest rookie score. All these feats would’ve been impossible if Maguire didn’t have the right equipment to enhance her game. So, let’s tae a look at what those are.

Leona Maguire is a Ping-sponsored athlete and uses many of their latest clubs. She uses the Ping G430 LS driver, which is a popular driver for pros. This driver is known for its up-to-date technology and its low spin capability. The LPGA star uses a Graphite Design Tour AD HD 5 R1 shaft with it.

She also sticks with Ping’s G 425 range woods and uses and carries an unusual number of hybrids (3) in her bag. The lofts on these are 22 degrees, 26 degrees, and 30 degrees. Then again, who are we to question the lowest scoring rookie?

Due to having so many woods in her bag, Maguire only uses irons of the i120 Ping range from the utility wedge up to the 7-iron. These clubs were launched in 2018 and have since been her go-to on the fairway. They are not complete blades and have a somewhat muscle-back design with an elastomer insert in the back.

Her other wedges, notably, are the popular Vokey Design SM9 wedges of lofts 54 degrees and 56 degrees. These are the earlier versions of the SM10 wedges released recently but are extremely good at handling all lies as their grind comes in several varieties.

Coming to her putter, she again sticks with Ping using their Vault 2.0 Ketsch on the greens. Like majority of the pros, Maguire uses the Titleist Pro V1.

Leona Maguire does update her clubs from time to time, however, this has been her setup for about a year and a half proving that if she’s one thing, it’s loyal. That shows in her sticking with her other sponsor too despite controversy.

Leona Maguire is being urged to drop Kingspan as her sponsor

The LPGA star is sponsored by Fairway and Greene, whose apparel she dons on the course. Interestingly, she’s also sponsored by Kingspan, and therein began her trouble, for the firm is being scrutinized for its role in the Grenfell Tower disaster.

After the role of Kingspan, an Irish building materials company, came to light in the Grenfell Tower tragedy, Leona Maguire is being urged by the Grenfell United group to drop Kingspan as her sponsor. Shane Lowry, who was also sponsored by them, announced dropping the company as his sponsor earlier this week. The Formula 1 team, Mercedes, has also dropped them as sponsors. But not the LPGA pro, not yet.

Kingspan has been accused of “deeply entrenched and persistent dishonesty in pursuit of commercial gain coupled with a complete disregard for fire safety.” However, presently there’s no confirmation of the details of the news, and perhaps that has Maguire still on the fence. She wears the Kingspan logo can be seen on her clothes on the course, and has not yet taken a stand against them. Will that change when more details of the case come to light, though? We’ll find out soon enough!
