John Calipari was supposed to be celebrating. February 18 was a day for cake, memories, and laughter as he marked his daughter Erin’s birthday. But as he shared a touching tribute, recalling her boundless energy and fearless curiosity as a child, heartbreak unfolded back in Kentucky.
The devastating news of catastrophic flooding jolted the head coach back to a place he’s never truly left. Though he now calls Arkansas home, Calipari’s connection to the Bluegrass State runs deeper than any coaching tenure—and when disaster struck, he knew he had to act.
The numbers told the story, but Calipari himself summed it up in just one sentence: “My heart breaks for the 14 people who lost their lives, may they rest in peace.” His post on X expressed his sorrow for the victims of the Eastern Kentucky floods, a disaster that left families digging through wreckage, trying to piece their lives back together. “Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims in Eastern Kentucky,” he wrote. “Many friends from the area have been sending pictures and sharing the stories. So sad to see the devastation in communities that were already trying to recover from the last natural disaster.”
In his post, Calipari also committed to action. He and his wife, Ellen, pledged to donate to Governor Andy Beshear’s relief fund, encouraging others to do the same. “We may no longer be residents of Kentucky but know the power of the community and what they can do when they come together,” he wrote. It was a call to action, urging those who had the means to support a state that had given him so much during his years coaching at the University of Kentucky.

The Kentucky flooding had already claimed at least 12 lives by the 18th, with officials fearing that number would climb higher. Governor Beshear’s plea for help was clear and urgent: “We need your help from across the Commonwealth and across the country. We’ve set up the Team Kentucky Storm Relief Fund… the first thing we’re going to do is pay for every funeral because the first thing we do is mourn together.”
For Calipari, Kentucky has never just been a stop in his career—it has been home for 15 years. Now coaching the Razorbacks at Arkansas, Calipari has still made it clear that he remains committed to extending a helping hand to his former team’s home state. But with the Razorbacks struggling in the SEC, he might need a helping hand himself to flip their season around.
Razorbacks face SEC giant
While Arkansas is navigating a challenging season—currently 15-10 and sitting 12th in the SEC—the team is set to face Auburn in a tough matchup tomorrow. With the Razorbacks fighting for positioning and Auburn boasting a dominant 23-2 record, this game presents an uphill battle for Arkansas.

Auburn has been nearly unstoppable this season, leading the SEC in key statistical categories, including field goal percentage (48.5%) and points per game (85.1). Arkansas, on the other hand, has struggled with consistency, particularly on the road, where they hold a 3-4 record. The Razorbacks will need a strong performance from their key players to stand a chance against an Auburn squad that has won seven of its last eight games.
Historically, the head-to-head series between these teams has been competitive. In their last ten meetings, Arkansas and Auburn have split five wins each. However, their most recent encounter on January 6, 2024 was a one-sided affair, with Auburn dominating Arkansas 83-51. The Razorbacks will be looking for redemption, but they will need to find answers for Auburn’s high-powered offense and stifling defense.
As the Razorbacks prepare for their crucial matchup, Calipari’s focus is split between the court and the broader sense of responsibility he feels toward the people of Kentucky. Fingers remain crossed for the former Coach of the Year.
