It’s crazy to think what a relentless drive Michael Jordan has, as the 6-time NBA champion has gone far beyond the hardwood. He has stepped foot in the NASCAR world and is a successful businessman. So does it really come as a surprise to you when we say that he is into fishing tournaments as well? That and he also flexes his 84-foot yacht, Catch 23 with it. And recently he participated in another fishing tournament. But the real question is what does Jimmy Johnson have to say about it?
From the Buccaneer Cup Sailfish Release Tournament to the White Marlin Open, MJ is all here to compete. This year at JJFISHWEEK, Jordan came up with his team. They put up a fierce fight, but despite giving it their all, they had to settle for less.
His competition at JJFISHWEEK was with some of the best anglers in the game, but the GOAT still managed to sail through. While they didn’t take home the grand prize, a $123,500 check (a consolation prize for any competitor) and a podium finish still put them in elite company. Anyone who knows Michael Jordan knows that he’s already strategizing how to improve for next time. Jordan’s victory at the Buccaneer Cup in 2021 shows that it’s only a matter of time before he gets on the first-place finish at JJFISHWEEK.
Our avid fisherman, College Football Hall of Famer, and legendary coach, Jimmy Johnson himself confirms the news. He got on X to congratulate Jordan, writing, “Congratulations to Michael Jordan’s Catch 23 coming in 3rd place In jjfishweek & winning $123,500.” While these two legends built their careers in different sports, their paths have now crossed in the world of competitive fishing.

However, the top honors at the “Quest for the Ring” Championship Fishing Week (JJFISHWEEK) went to Team Remix, who secured first place with an impressive 18 releases, earning a total of $444,000. The second-place spot was taken by Team Just Chillin, achieving 14 releases and taking home $252,500.
Like Michael Jordan, Jimmy Johnson has long been involved in the fishing scene. But that is just one of the things he does. And while his fans support him through everything, his last announcement left them a little heartbroken.
Jimmy Johnson announced his retirement
While Jordon is all in the air, Jimmy is to hang up his headset for good. Our longtime Fox NFL Sunday analyst has officially announced his retirement. He closed the book on an incredible career that spanned football fields for 31 years. This marks the end of an era for fans who grew up listening to his insights.
Johnson once led the Cowboys to back-to-back Super Bowl wins in the ‘90s. He became just as well-known for his sharp takes on TV and his love for sport fishing. This guy has earned it. After years of juggling football, TV, and running one of the top fishing events in the world, Johnson says he’s ready to kick back in the Florida Keys, enjoy life, and spend more time with family.
So why now? Johnson hinted at retirement during an emotional speech before Super Bowl LIX, telling fans he was “happier than ever.” At 81, he’s ready to enjoy life at a slower pace, possibly spending more time fishing, his other great passion. His retirement leaves a massive void in football media, as Fox NFL Sunday will have to find a way to replace one of the most beloved analysts in the business.
In the round-table discussion, Jimmy thanked people, saying, “I’ve gotta thank my family for allowing me that time to accomplish some of those lengths, and I was blessed I had great players, great assistance coaches, and great friends, thank you.”
From hoisting Lombardi Trophies to delivering legendary one-liners on TV, Johnson’s impact on the game is undeniable. He exits the stage with his legacy firmly cemented—both on the field and in the booth. Fans may not be ready to say goodbye, but as Johnson himself said, he’s taking it “one day at a time.”
