Perhaps the way Oscar De La Hoya jibed at both Edgar Berlanga and Canelo Alvarez, chances are fans might witness the two boxers shaking hands before they lunge at each other on September 14. ‘The Golden Boy’s ongoing feud with Canelo Alvarez is fairly well known. But it seems the Barcelona Olympic gold medalist wanted some additions to his adversary list.
He shared a few of his thoughts on ‘The Chosen One’ a few days ago. Apparently Berlanga didn’t find it to his liking, thereby launching a tirade of his own. In the latest episode of his ‘Thursday Clap-Back’, Oscar De La Hoya took the opportunity to launch a befitting riposte. Of course he didn’t forget Canelo Alvarez at all. The Golden Boy Promotions head is on a high after charge Vergil Ortiz Jr. scored a notable win in a ‘fight of the year’ contender.

“Edgar Berlanga I called you out for not being Puerto Rican; I simply spoke the facts,” said De La Hoya. He further added that perhaps it might have caught the Brooklyn-born boxer with an egg on his face. So instead of a responsible reply, he opted to poke fun at him by posting a picture that was over a decade old.

Now for that photo, ‘The Golden Boy’ insisted he has already been a subject of countless memes and digs. Hence, “Why didn’t you just post your birth certificate from Puerto Rico unless you don’t have one? Don’t tell me you’re another lame who is offended by the truth. Come on, bro.” the next day of Oscar De La Hoya’s dig as Devin Haney.
The former world champion taunted the light welterweight champion following the clips of his brawl going viral. Perhaps he wanted to ‘save the best for the last’. Calling out Canelo Alvarez, he said, “As always the most important topic of every week, Canelo, f**k you!”
“It’s going to sound amazing, man. Puerto Rico versus Mexico—that’s the biggest rivalry in boxing, you know, and we’re looking forward to making history on September 14th, fireworks baby,” said Edgar Berlanga at the latest presser.
But Oscar De La Hoya seems to disagree. “Edgar Berlanga… He claims he has [the] whole country [Puerto Rico] behind him. Edgar, bro, you are from Brooklyn. I think I am more Puerto Rican than you are, and I only lived there for six years. Puerto Rico doesn’t claim you, bro,” said the Golden Boy on Thursday Clap-Back’.

In return, Edgar Berlanga let off a full steam against ‘The Golden Boy’. In an expletive-laden message, he shared how earlier De La Hoya was so keen about him fighting under the ‘The Golden Boy Promotions’ banner. Sometime after he parted ways with Top Rank, ‘The Chosen One’ was on the lookout for a new promoter. That’s when talks and pictures emerged of discussions taking place with Oscar De La Hoya and team. Nevertheless, the 27-year-old boxer eventually settled with Eddie Hearn‘s Matchroom Boxing.

As far as Canelo Alvarez is concerned, is it universally known how the relations between De La Hoya and the Mexican superstar turned sour over the years, following their acrimonious separation. Neither of the two backed out from taking a swipe at each other whenever an opportunity presented itself. Things took the turn for the worst when ‘The Golden Boy’ and Alvarez almost came to blows at the presser ahead of the Jaime Munguia fight. Subsequently, De La Hoya followed up the episode with a legal notice requiring Alvarez to ‘immediately retract defamatory allegations’.
