The news that his former FSU teammate, Keith Ross, was battling stage 4 terminal cancer was quite devastating. Deion and Ross had a strong connection from their time at Florida State, where Ross was a standout running back from 1985-1988 and the Buffs HC was a CB. So Deion couldn’t just sit back and watch. He quickly took to X to share a fundraiser link, writing, “This is a very sensitive matter; please donate whatever you can.” The fundraiser has already raised $15,000 towards the $100,000 goal. Sadly, Ross passed away just a day after Deion posted the fundraiser link, making the loss even more poignant.
As life threw Deion Sanders a curveball, he is still choosing to rise above adversity. And addressing the entire situation of life and death, Coach Prime hit Instagram and said, “Lord, I’m going to relax a little this week and deal with this tumultuous week spiritually & psychologically because it weighed on me. Thank you, Lord, for allowing me to hear during tremendous turbulence. Amen!”
Healing takes time, especially when the pain hits you from all sides. Losing Keith Ross was a huge blow, but it’s not the only loss Deion has faced.

McCartney revolutionized the game for Colorado, transforming the program into a dominant force and leading them to their sole title in 1990. Coach Prime was a rock for McCartney during his health struggles. After McCartney passed, Prime Time’s simple tribute, “Legend,” spoke volumes about their bond.
It can be hard to imagine someone you barely knew becoming a crucial part of your life, but that’s the reality for someone like Deion Sanders, who’s constantly in the spotlight. Not only did he lose his friend Keith Ross this month, but he also lost Evis McGee, a key member of his security team since his days at Jackson State. Back in April 2024, Coach Prime opened up on the “All the Smoke Podcast” about his battles with mental health and his journey toward spirituality. He also revealed that there was a time in his life when he felt so low he contemplated ending his own life. It was at that moment he turned to spirituality to overcome his struggles.
Talking about the whole situation, he said, “I was on the side of a highway tryna ki-l myself. You know darn right I did. I went through a phase that God was calling me collect.” Now you can understand why he always tends to follow the path of spirituality for peace. Even in this tough situation, Coach Prime did the same. Through it all, he is out there reminding everyone that even in the most difficult moments, it is still possible to make an impact and keep the mission alive.
