Amidst the CFB regular season reaching finality, the upper echelon of players is beginning to fall into 2 distinct factions. Those preparing for December football and those, perhaps begrudgingly, preparing for April’s draft. Unfortunately, Shedeur Sanders falls in the latter category. The Colorado Buffaloes’ season is over, pending a Bowl game. So Shedeur’s focus swiftly moves towards his future NFL escapades.
Shedeur is almost consensually considered the best quarterback prospect in his class. His tangible traits as a physical specimen with amazing accuracy, combined with his intangibles rising out of the shadow cast by his dad, make him a potential franchise QB. This is not lost on Sheduer either. He often makes subtle remarks about organizations that could be potential landing spots. Normally these are struggling teams that will have a draft pick at least in the vicinity of the top 3. That notion still holds. However, he’s also shot for the moon.
In a video on his own 2Legendary YouTube channel, Shedeur Sanders played a game of “Legendary or not”. While most of the categories were based around a Thanksgiving theme, two questions raised eyebrows. He was asked if the Detroit Lions were legendary or not. A Shedeur, grinning from ear to ear, replied, “Legendary”. He was then asked the same question about the Dallas Cowboys. Once again, he could hardly contain his excitement and replied the same. An interesting tandem of teams and questions to throw into the mix alongside “Pecan pie” and “Pumpkin-spice latte”, you’d think!
The Cowboys are the more fascinating talking point and one that has been gaining traction over recent weeks. The interest is mutual by all accords. Nobody expected Jerry Jones to be in the QB market anytime soon after handing Dak Prescott the biggest contract in NFL history. But America’s team have had a perilous traversal through their season.
This is owing to some poor roster planning, a non-existent running game and some misfortune with injuries. They’ll have a high draft pick as a result. You wouldn’t put it past the Cowboys’ owner/GM to chase the fanfare and publicity that will come with having a Sanders lining up with the iconic star on their jersey at Jerry’s World.
As for the Lions part of the equation, one can perhaps assume that was a throwaway question in the game. The chances of Shedeur being in Detroit are next to nil. Jared Goff has had an MVP-adjacent season as a quarterback and is under contract in 2025. Plus, they lead the NFC and will have nowhere near the draft capital required. The intrigue around Shedeur’s next home is, like everything else in his career so far, tied to Deion.
Are Deion and Shedeur Sanders a package deal for the Cowboys?
Jerry Jones knew he would likely be on the lookout for a new coach at the end of the season when he kept Mike McCarthy on the leash of a one-year deal. However, the process has been expedited. McCarthy’s tenure has been marred by his shortcomings in the postseason. But for reasons mostly beyond his control, the regular season itself may prove fatal.
According to reports, Jerry’s choices for a replacement have largely boiled down to two completely contrasting figures. Deion Sanders and Bill Belichick are the primary names in the reckoning. Luring Deion to Dallas has so far proven a challenge. With the likes of 5-star recruit Julian Lewis committing to Colorado, it appears Deion’s future in Boulder remains intact. However, Deion has often expressed his wish to coach Shedeur in the pros. Just as he has along every step of the way through high school and college.
Whether the father-son duo is a package deal or not, they’re both on Jerry Jones’ radar. So, does Jerry bite the proverbial bullet on Dak’s contract if he can draft Shedeur? It will be fascinating to see how things unfold. Shedeur is tracking towards being a star in the NFL. As with everything involving Jerry Jones and the Sanders, expect extravagance.
