Jim Harbaugh left a void in Michigan that his replacement Sherrone Moore is finding hard to fill. The National Championship team is coming off a 4-1 season but there’s no dominance that tinged each of their season games before this year. With their loss against Texas and their close victories, they have landed themselves on the wrong side of discussion as they look “lost.” Still, a CFB analyst feels that the Wolverines have a chance to rewrite their destiny in the college football playoffs. But there’s a warning that comes with it too.
A shipwreck! That’s how On3’s JD PicKell describes Michigan in a new YouTube episode on October 4. Despite listing Sherrone Moore’s program as one of the likely teams with one loss to still make it to the CFP, PicKell cites the dangers saying, “It’s great that you’re [Michigan] still alive… The reality is though, whenever you’re floating on a life raft or a piece of debris from a wrecked ship, you got to find a way to adjust.”
Michigan became a major headline after their 31-12 fall to Texas in Week 2. Starting Davis Warren as the main QB over Alex Orji through the first three games put Sherrone Moore in hot water as his coaching style was criticized by many people. Orji started the last two games but both are close wins with 27-24 each for both USC and Minnesota, nothing like the single-digit points they rendered their opponents last season.
After Michigan’s weakness got exposed by Sherrone Moore’s coaching, even Joel Klatt’s confidence in the National Champions diminished. In his take for Michigan in The Joel Klatt Show, he bluntly stated, “Michigan looks lost right now. This is not anywhere close to the team that we have seen over the last three years.” But as Sherrone Moore announced, it looks like PicKell’s advice for adjustment is already being implemented after their last Minnesota scare.
Sherrone Moore addresses Michigan’s gaps
Michigan survived a scare in their last 27-24 victory over unranked Minnesota and Sherrone Moore isn’t satisfied with the result. He received a lot of heat for not starting Alex Orji but even when he did, the transfer QB underplayed completing just 17 of 30 passes for 118 yards and one touchdown. Still, Moore believes that they have more to improve aside from their QB.
Sherrone Moore said of his offense, “I mean, a work in progress, but got to get better, got to continue to strive to get better.” And then he added, “Starts with me and how we organize practice and things we can do to help them, so we’ll continue to do that to get better.” The Wolverines HC didn’t specify but he revealed that the team has already made some adjustments following the Texas loss that have helped them in moving forward. Their next game on October 6 will be against their National Championship opponent from last year whom they dominated 34-13. Will they fare well in this interesting game against the Washington Huskies? Fingers are crossed.
