Without the energy and enthusiasm of fans, sports doesn’t become a festival. That’s especially true when in the city of Boston. The sports culture in the city alludes to genuine passion and love for their organizations. Just look at the Celtics championship parade and the swarm of fans around it. However, in Boston, if they love strongly, then their wrath is even worse. As the franchise went on sale, Kevin Garnett ensured the warning reached the prospective buyers.
While on the Ticket & the Truth, Garnett, and Paul Pierce, two Boston Celtics icons spoke about the imminent sale of the franchise. While addressing the new ownership, Pierce felt it would be someone nobody knows. The Big Ticket sensed a tech giant could take the helm. But more importantly, the 48-year-old felt the new ownership needs to share a trait with Wyc Grousbeck – care for the fans’ wishes.
“He was always in that cloud of I got to, I have a responsibility to the past in having this precious gem. How do we curate and grow this precious gem? I really felt like that when I talked to him. You know what I’m saying? So, whoever it is is going to have to have a piece of that. Because if you come in here just trying to flip it and it’s about to buy. The fans sniff that out, man. The fans in Boston, they’re not for that s**t. They’ll tear that m*********er up if they have to, you know what I’m saying? To prove a point,” the Big Ticket said.
The fans of not just the Boston Celtics, but any Boston-based sports teams are nothing short of wild. For them, victory is almost a demand. And they show up to the task without fail. That’s why they take a strong stance when things go south. For any new owner coming in, being on the good side of the fans will ensure they always have support on their side. In terms of their admiration for the Celtics, that will have to be of integral importance given the luxury tax bill that’s about to hit the franchise soon.
In such times, an owner with deep pockets like Jeff Bezos would have been ideal. However, it seems he has withdrawn his supposed interest.
Jeff Bezos is not aiming for the Boston Celtics
Since the beginning of the year, it seemed like the Amazon CEO wanted some action in the world of sports. He specifically targeted the NFL. actively submitting his bid for the Washington Commanders. There was also news that he wanted a part of the Seattle Seahawks, with the Amazon HQ also located there.
Hence, when Bill Simmons stated he was a serious candidate to buy the Celtics, every fan was elated. Worth nearly $200 billion, he has the cash flow to sustain the current championship core while also enhancing other facets of the franchise. But the newest report states there was never an intention in the first place.
According to Nick Wingfield of The Information, there is “zero truth” behind Bezos wanting the Celtics. This now leaves two buyers. FSG, who have LeBron James as a partner in the firm and the minority owner Steve Pagliuca.
