It’s a third Pettersson for the Vancouver Canucks… The team might need name tags in the locker room at this rate. Entering the new month, the Canucks are taking new beginnings with some new additions to its roster as they prepare for their upcoming match on February 2, 2025. The team is returning to action for their 17th game of the brand new year, competing against the Detroit Red Wings.
Located in Rogers Arena, the Sunday match is one such game in which the team competes before facing the Avalanche and then traveling to San Jose for their next scheduled matchup against the Sharks. Returning back, there is another game that awaits the Canucks before going for their break for the 4-Nations Face-Off game. But for their Sunday’s match, the team has got its hands over their first defenseman.
Canucks gets its first defenseman
Among the newly acquired players, Marcus Pettersson will be one such highlighting player coming in as the defenseman of the Vancouver Canucks. Giving on his availability on Sunday’s match, Patrik Allvin confirms his participation in representing the team.
Coming to the description of the player, Marcus Pettersson is one such player that the Vancouver Canucks were in search of for over a year. A steady and handy defenseman, his addition to the blue line roster will indeed be a promising one for the team. All we now have to wait and see whether it works in their favor now.
The February 2 match between the Canucks and Red Wings will be the second time the two face since their last appearance on the December 1 match. The Canucks stood victorious, taking over a 5-4 win against the Wings. Jake DeBrusk was, however, the game-changer of the match, getting his hat trick for the first time.
On the other hand, the Detroit Red Wings win against the Calgary Flames’ on Saturday’s match was a fifth in a row. And it’s not just Marcus; their opponent Canucks have other new players in hand to be seen making their debut for the team.
Patrik Allvin confirms the new participating players
Besides the 6’3 defenseman Marcus Pettersson, the Vancouver Canucks picked up three other new trades for their team that can come in handy for Sunday’s match. As confirmed by Patrick Allvin, not just Pattersson but the newly acquired players list that also includes Filip Chytil, Drew O’Connor, and Victor Mancini will probably be available for the game.
While Pettersson will bring in the defensive game, the Canucks will add another Pittsburgh Penguins player to their roster. With over six goals and ten assists made in the 53 games of the season, taking the forward position, Drew O’Connor is replacing Danton Heinen, who is now a part of the Penguins.
Canucks were struggling for a longing with the ongoing tension between J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson. To put things into order, they traded off Miller to the New York Rangers in exchange for Filip Chytil and Victor Mancini, which also included the 2025 NHL draft first-round pick. Miller, who was currently under a seven-year contract since 2022 worth $56 million, had to say goodbye to his team but soon made his debut appearance for the Rangers in a February 1 match against the Boston Bruins, which somehow didn’t go well. But there is still hope for him in Sunday’s match when the Rangers compete against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Chytil, drafted in 2017 by the Rangers, holds a career performance of 164 points, which includes 75 goals and 89 assists in over 378 games played. As far as his current season performance is concerned, the player has scored over 20 points in 41 games played in total, with 11 goals and 9 assists included. Mancini, on the other hand, made his debut for the Rangers this season after getting drafted in 2022 on a two-year contract.
Claiming such valuable assists for the team and with J.T. Miller out of the picture, the February 2 match between the Vancouver Canucks and the Detroit Red Wings is carrying great expectations. Whether the performances by the newbies will be an addition to the team’s win or not remains to be seen as they make a promising start to the new month.
